COVID-19 – Special Leave

There are specific reasons where special leave should be granted, directly linked to COVID-19 related absences as detailed in the absence category matrix. These are all paid, with the exception of the travel quarantine leave. Further information on some of the other reasons that special leave will be provided is detailed below:

Self-Isolation – Household

If an employee contacts you to inform you that they live within a household where someone has tested positive for coronavirus, they must be advised to remain at home and book a test. Information on how to book a test can be found here.

  • If the person the employee lives with has not yet been tested they should remain at home until the household member has received their test results. Further information on household isolation can be found here.
  • The absence must be recorded on iTrent by the manager, in accordance with the matrix. Please note that if the employee is fit enough to work from home and this can be accommodated by the service (if they are not already doing so) there is no requirement to record this as special leave.

Self-Isolation – Test & Protect

If an employee is contacted by Test & Protect and advised to self-isolate for 10 days they must inform the manager with this information as soon as they are made aware and the absence recorded in accordance with the matrix.

Please note that if the employee is fit enough to work from home and this can be accommodated by the service (if they are not already doing so) there is no requirement to record this as special leave.

The rules in regards to those identified as close contacts has changed and further information can be found here.

Special Leave – Pregnant (28weeks) COVID

  • For those employees who are over 28 weeks pregnant and where the individual risk assessment has identified that stringent social distancing cannot be maintained within the workplace, special leave should be given unless the employee can work from home.

Further guidance on what steps need to be taken in relation to all pregnant employees is contained here.

The absence category matrix provides information on all other types of COVID-19 related special leave.
