Student Placements

Placements offer students the opportunity to gain work experience while they are studying and allow them to apply their experience in the workplace into their learning from University and College.  If you want to take on a student, and offer them an exciting opportunity to experience first hand what it’s like working in a fast paced environment, then contact the Early Careers Team who can support you in this.

Some examples of student placements include an HR student working 1 day per week for a twelve week period reviewing our PRD process or Post Graduate Business Analyst students who were placed within various Services for 3 weeks creating and carrying out surveys.  Any placement you are thinking of offering needs to be meaningful and fit with our service workforce plans.  Student placements can offer the opportunity to get them involved in a specific short term project which will benefit the Council as well as developing the skills of the student.

Social Work Students

North Lanarkshire Council has a long standing commitment to providing high quality placements to student social workers from a number of different Universities across Scotland.  We are able to offer students access to a range of learning opportunities in a variety of care settings across the authority giving them a fantastic experience in their placement.  TOD works in partnership with Practice Teachers and Link Workers across the Service who are committed to the development of our student social workers.  Practice Teachers and Link Workers assess our students against the standards in Social Work Education in Scotland as well as ensuring they meet the requirements of the SSSC code of conduct.

Many of our previous students have secured full time employment within NLC as Newly Qualified Social Workers where they then receive further support and learning to help them in their first year of practice.

We also offer internal opportunities for staff looking for a career change to Social work and will shortly be bringing back our Trainee Social Work Programme which allows staff to study in their own time, with sponsorship from NLC to achieve their degree in Social Work with the Open University.
